Ship Channel Permit Approved - November 15, 2010

The US Army Corps of Engineers has issued a record of decision (ROD) and permits creating the opportunity for deepening the federal Matagorda Ship Channel at some point in the future.

At this time the federal government and the Calhoun Port Authority have no funding or active plans for ship channel deepening.

The Port Authority sought the permits in 2005 to allow future deepening and widening of the entire 26 mile long channel from the Gulf to the Point Comfort Turning Basin. The Corps action authorizes the deepening of the channel from the current depth of 36 feet to an operating depth of 44 feet. The channel bottom width would be increased from 200 to 400 feet to allow for two-way ship traffic.

Studies were done, public hearings were held and a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) was published in 2007 including a dredge material management plan identifying future placement areas. After review by the public and natural resource agencies the final EIS was published in July 2009.

The authorized depth and width of the channel have not changed since it was first constructed in the early 1960s.

The channel improvements may be needed in the future to serve new industrial customers and the larger ships now common in the world's modern fleet.
