Harbor Pilot Larry Robinson Honored
for 31 Years of Keeping Vessels and the Natural Environment Safe at the Port of Port Lavaca-Point Comfort

Sept. 13, 2012

Captain Larry Robinson, long-time leader of the Matagorda Ship Channel Pilots Association, has retired after 31 years of safely guiding ships in and out of the Port of Port Lavaca-Point Comfort.

Port Board members recognized Robinson for his service during their September 2012 meeting and Port Director Charles Hausmann presented him with a plaque of appreciation.

Captain Cody Lynch joined the local pilots a year ago in anticipation of Robinson’s retirement.  The association operates with a total of four pilots including Captain Steve Gibson, Captain Joe Bokorney and Captain David Adrian.  The pilots job is to look out for the safety of ships calling at the port, to keep docks from being damaged and to protect the natural environment of the Matagorda and Lavaca bay system.

Robinson says what he misses most in retirement is the opportunity on a daily basis to meet people aboard ships, work with the other pilots and see all of the other people who provide the teamwork necessary to move vessels and cargo in and out of the port.

He noted that the width, depth and jetty channel currents of the Matagorda Ship Channel are at times very challenging to the pilots.

Robinson served in the U.S. Navy during the 1960s and 1970s, first becoming a pilot apprentice and then an unlimited tonnage Navy Harbor Pilot in 1974.  He piloted vessels at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, at Naval Station Rota in Spain – gateway to the Mediterranean, and at the now decommissioned Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Puerto Rico.  He retired from the Navy in 1981.

“Guantanamo was a great place for a harbor pilot because we had the opportunity to work every type of ship the Navy had in addition to the civilian support ships including tankers, freighters and container ships,” he said.

Robinson, 67, is a well-known personality in Calhoun County where he frequently serves as master of ceremonies and musical entertainer for special events.
